The word “Safari” means journey in Swahili. Let me take you and your business on a journey by personally walking you through my proven 6-Step SAFARI System. Take it and implement what you learn, and you’ll never worry about getting clients again.  This is a safari for your business! 

If you are feeling overworked and underpaid, or frustrated that you can’t seem to find enough of the right clients, you’re in the right place. 

Not long ago, I was struggling in my own travel business, feeling frustrated, overworked and underpaid. I was good at planning safaris – excellent, in fact.  But finding enough of the right clients seemed beyond my ability. More often than not, I ended up working with difficult, penny-pinching, indecisive clients with champagne taste on a beer budget.

Since I wasn’t attracting enough clients who wanted to travel to Africa (which is the travel niche I’m in, but more about that later), I took all work that came to me, that means every single person who walked in the door or called and wanted to travel anywhere in the world, I would take their business.  One day I would be a Caribbean specialist.  The next day, I would have to learn the European rail system as I planned a self-drive tour of Italy.  I didn’t have the confidence to ask for compensation for the hours I poured into trying to be an instant expert.  And the whopping $240 commission I got for a trip that took 16 hours of my time, energy, resources and passion to put together didn’t go very far.  In hindsight, I was, in essence, a volunteer. Do you ever feel like a volunteer in your business?

It affected my personal life.  I worked from home, so there was never an “off” button for me.  In between caring for my 2 young children and husband, I found myself at my desk, responding to emails, putting together detailed itineraries at all hours of the day and night.  “Why is Mommy always working?” they would ask, with big sad eyes.  Talk about guilt.  Even when I wasn’t working, I was never totally present for them.  I wanted to be a good mom, and I wanted to be a good travel consultant for my clients.  How does one do it all?

One day, I hit rock bottom.  I took an honest look at my situation and saw that my family was falling apart.  My husband and I didn’t know each other anymore.  My 3-year-old son was constantly acting out – his way of getting my attention and keeping his mommy and daddy together.  My 5-year-old daughter developed Psoriasis – a skin condition that was rooted from deep emotional pain.  And, my business – which totally consumed me – was barely surviving financially.  My world was on a fast track to disaster. 

I couldn’t ignore the truth in my world any longer.  I had to keep my family together.  Something had to change. 

I came so close to giving up my business and throwing in the towel.  But I didn’t because it felt like I was giving up on me and my passion.  I knew there had to be a way. There had to be a different path – one that lead to success, prosperity and fulfillment. To save my family and my own sanity, I decided I was going to find that path to happiness and success.  So, instead of giving up, I made a commitment to change the WAY I did business. 
I knew the most important thing I could do was to figure out how to make more money while working less hours in my business.  I tapped into my Wall Street analyst skills and looked long and hard at my numbers.  I finally saw them for what they were.

It was so obvious.  I had to stop working for nothing.

The ridiculously long hours that wreaked havoc on my family, not to mention me, finally brought me to the breaking point.

I felt it was time I established a bottom line figure for the bookings I would work on. No more $900.00 3-night Las Vegas packages for me.  If my client wasn’t coming to the table with more than $5,000.00 to spend on COMMISSIONABLE travel, I pointed them elsewhere. Yes, I was actually turning business away even though my husband was screaming at me, “Are you crazy?!!”

Let me be honest. This decision was one of the most difficult I’ve ever had to make. So much was riding on me being able to take my business to the next level without compromising my family in the process. It was a gut-wrenching, and I shed more than a few tears in the process, but I knew deep down that this was the direction I had to take.
The second thing I did was take off the many masks I wore, trying to be an expert on any and all travel that came my way.  My passion and expertise was for travel to Africa, and it was time to declare my specialty.  The name of my company, after all, was Hills of Africa Travel.  I had to stop sending mixed messages to my clients.

It was very scary.  At the time, most of the business that came to me was not to Africa, so I was turning away 75-80% of my business.  I had more free time – which was great and very healing for my family. But I still feared that my business would all but disappear. 

Then the opposite happened.  My business exploded. 
I went from making $36,000.00 in commissions at the end of 2005 to $146,000.00 in commissions at the end of 2006.  In just 12 short months, my income had multiplied 5Xs.  And I worked fewer hours than I had in the past 4 years. 

Yes, I had work/life balance again.  I made a conscientious effort to create an “off” button and stopped working after certain hours and I no longer work on weekends.  All this because I picked a specialty and established a bottom line for travel inquiries.  Here’s another thing, our revenues have NEVER dropped below six figures since then – even in 2008 and 2009, which were some of the most difficult years in travel.

So if there is one thing you take from this it is that experts make more money. Picking a specialty is one of the most empowering things you can do for your business. Most people don’t do it because they are afraid they will lose business, or lose the opportunity to establish a relationship with new prospects. What happens in reality is exactly the opposite. You get referrals, people remember you and your story, and your business will GROW in ways you never even imagined it could.

Another reason people don’t pick a specialty or niche area is because they don’t know how or what to pick.  Well, there’s more good news for you – the first week of my program walks you, step-by-step through this process showing you exactly how to connect with the “sweet spot” in your travel business.  Once you narrow in on your brilliance and declare a specialty around it – you will be taken through the process of creating language for your marketing materials that pulls ideal clients in to you like a magnet.

But over the course of 4 years, the results are nothing short of amazing.  Hills of Africa crossed 7 figures in sales in 2010, has quadrupled in size and seen revenues grow 5 fold.  If you remember, these weren’t just any typical 4 years.  These were the years when Wall Street collapsed and was bailed out by the US government, the economy tanked, unemployment rose to an all-time high and doom and gloom was the flavor of the day.  Yet we achieved this incredible success amidst this challenging environment selling a high-end, luxury travel product.  Pretty amazing, yes?
Hills of Africa no longer works with penny-pinching clients with champagne tastes and beer budgets.  We now work with billionaires, celebrities and lots of amazing, down-to-earth clients who have a passion for Africa and a decent amount of money to spend on their journey. It’s not greedy to turn away the lower budget travelers – it’s just plain good business, unless you want to be overworked and underpaid, and continue to struggle to provide for yourself and your family.

What’s amazing is that we aren’t working any more hours and we aren’t doing anything different for our clients. Remember those late nights I talked about earlier? Back then, stress dominated my life. I lost so much sleep and energy trying to keep pace that it actually made me ineffective at my job, not to mention the fact I wasn’t able to be there for my family. Who can realistically keep that up? I now work far less hours, have much more free time, and can travel a whole lot more, too.

We provide the exact same service we always have. But we are getting paid a WHOLE lot more. The difference is how we market and who we attract. Now we attract exactly the right kind of clients; people who are happy to pay us, who are as super-enthusiastic about travel as we are, and who really understand the value the right travel professional brings to the table. In short, they love partnering with us for all their travel needs, and as a result, they keep coming back and telling others about us too! 

And this is good news for you, because I am handing over ALL the tools and techniques that work and NONE of the ones that don’t work. Obviously, that depends on how long you’ve been in business and how much you put into the assignments in the home study system.
